This discreet stainless steel rope is ideal for outdoor use and for hanging loads. Quality and flexible, this steel rope is sold by the metre at La Corderie. The stainless steel is AISI 316 quality.
Stainless Steel Cable: Strength and Versatility
Stainless steel cable, an alloy containing chromium (and sometimes nickel), offers excellent corrosion resistance, even in marine or very humid environments. More durable and aesthetically pleasing than galvanized steel, this material does not rust and requires very little maintenance. Although often more expensive, it is preferred for applications requiring long life or a high-quality finish (boating, architecture, railings, outdoor installations, lifting).
Choosing the optimal stainless steel cable depends on two essential criteria: the steel grade (corrosion resistance) and its construction (flexibility and rigidity).
1. Stainless Steel Grades and Environment
The selection of the grade is crucial for the installation's durability, particularly in the face of corrosive agents.
304 (A2) Stainless Steel: Ideal for indoor or non-aggressive outdoor environments. It is perfectly suited for general use (indoor staircases, terraces away from the sea, etc.).
316 (A4) Stainless Steel: Contains molybdenum, which gives it superior resistance to acids and salt. It is essential in corrosive marine or industrial environments (boats, pontoons, seaside railings).
2. Construction and Applications
The cable structure is identified by a format such as "7x7" or "7x19" (number of strands x number of wires per strand), determining its flexibility.

Typical Applications
1x19
Low
High
Railings, guying, static applications where aesthetics and high tension are required.
7x7

Shade sails, clotheslines, control cables, semi-static applications.
7x19

Low
Lifting, lifelines, industrial and marine applications requiring high pulley flexibility.
In summary: For static installations such as guardrails, a rigid 1x19 cable in 304 (indoor) or 316 (outdoor/marine) stainless steel is suitable. For lifting operations, a flexible 7x19 cable is preferred, often in 316 stainless steel for its robustness and adaptability to movement.
